About, ownership & AI transparency
Local news for cities that have lost theirs, produced with AI, openly and under common ownership.
The current figure counts rows where network_sites.active = true. It is not the broader city registry, a domain inventory count, or a claim that every city has the same editorial depth. If the canonical response is unavailable, no stored estimate is substituted.
This network exists to give local coverage to towns and cities that have lost most of theirs, produced with AI so it is viable at small scale, and to test whether that can work as a business. It is early and experimental, and this page explains exactly how it works and who is behind it.
Ownership
Who owns it
The Daily Network is a group of local news mastheads under common ownership and common operation. The publisher is named on each masthead. The mastheads are not editorially independent from each other; they share tooling, standards and this ownership statement.
When we describe the network as free and independent, we mean it is free to read and it is not owned by an incumbent media group. We do not mean that any two Daily Network mastheads are unrelated to each other. We disclose that here deliberately.
Method
How the journalism is made
Every article on the network is produced with AI and passed through a set of automated checks before it can publish. The pipeline is deliberately narrow so a single change to a check applies to every city at once.
- AI draftingModels draft the piece against a city-specific brief, using named public data sources where relevant (weather, court lists, transport, official statements).
- Accuracy & quality gatesAutomated gates check for sourcing, factual claims that need citation, tone, and category fit. Hard-news pieces are held back unless they are backed by cited sources.
- Dedup & image checksStories are compared across cities to catch duplicates and near-duplicates. Images are checked for provenance and category match before they attach to a story.
- PublishOnly pieces that clear every gate publish. Anything that fails stays in draft and is either fixed or discarded.
In the interest of honesty
What our oversight does not do
There is human oversight of the system and spot-checking, but a human does not read every article, or every sensitive one, before it publishes. That is a real limitation and we want a reader to know it before they trust a story.
We have had cases where the safeguards were not enough. A sports article published with fabricated statistics. Property articles published without sufficient sourcing. When we find these we correct them, and we tighten the gate that let them through. Improving this is an ongoing priority, not a solved problem.
Canonical Brain
The network at a glance
These figures use the current canonical Daily Network Brain response. Active-site counts come from network_sites.active = true, and article counts include published rows only. No fallback snapshot is presented as current evidence.

Commercial
Advertising & revenue
Verified network revenue is unavailable because no canonical revenue source is connected to this application. Internal tests, manual entries, targets and Search Console activity are not reported as revenue.
Order and payment status must be verified against the relevant payment and fulfilment systems before it is reported as third-party revenue.
Advertising from any entity under common ownership is labelled as related-party advertising and is not reported as third-party revenue. Current placement status requires verification.
